Selection Guide for Foamed Silicone (Silicone Foam)
—From key parameters to typical applications
Abstract: Foamed silicone is essentially a silicone rubber sponge, manufactured from liquid silicone rubber through foaming and vulcanization to form a uniform porous structure. It possesses advantages such as temperature resistance, aging resistance, and being lightweight, soft, and compressible.
We will help engineers and purchasing personnel quickly complete initial material selection and prepare quotation documents by addressing four key aspects: “Differences between foamed silicone and common foams,” “Key engineering selection criteria,” “Process routes and consistency,” and “Four typical applications.”
What is foamed silicone? Why is it not the same as “ordinary foam”?
In the foam products industry, materials such as EPDM, CR, PU, IXPE, PVC, and acrylic foam are very common, but they belong to different material systems than silicone foam.
In engineering, “foam” merely represents a structural form (porous and compressible), and does not imply uniformity of the material matrix. The core value of silicone foam lies in: retaining the environmental resistance and reliability characteristics of the silicone rubber system while obtaining the advantages of a foam structure, making it more suitable for applications that are more sensitive to lifespan degradation, temperature range, or safety compliance.
Therefore, foamed silicone has a very wide range of applications in engineering and electronic equipment.
The engineering selection process must first align with the specified parameters (thickness/density/flame retardancy).
If your project is currently facing specific selection issues, it is recommended that you prioritize using the “delivery window” to narrow down the range of materials when communicating with suppliers, before proceeding with performance verification and cost evaluation.
This “deliverable window” refers to the range of specifications that your chosen supplier must be able to consistently and reliably deliver under stable mass production/regular supply conditions. It’s crucial to focus on the “consistency of supply capability,” not just meeting the requirements for a single sample.
Let’s first familiarize ourselves with the properties of foamed silicone:
(Different projects have different requirements. We need to determine the corresponding levels and test conditions based on the specific requirements of each project, and the TDS/test report will serve as the definitive document. If you have more specific testing requirements, please feel free to contact us.)
Purchasing suggestion: When inquiring about prices, providing the target thickness, density range, and UL94 requirements will significantly reduce communication costs and help avoid receiving incorrect samples.
